“You really think so?”

“I know so.”

The phone on the wall behind Hank’s head chimed its double tone, and he reached for the receiver.

“I’ll get it,” Luke said hastily and grabbed the receiver. “Thornton.”

He hesitated taking the call when he realized the caller was Cliff from Luke’s office back in the city. That could only mean trouble with the Koenig deal.

“Okay, put him through.”

Hank stopped work on the girth.

Luke listened to Cliff whine for several moments and could feel the old trainer watching him. He was right. The Koenig deal was going south on them.

“Then add ten percent,” he ordered Cliff, and his hand went to his hip.

This was not good. He’d promised Hank he would leave his office behind on this trip and devote one hundred percent of himself to the ranch and his father.

“Okay then, double Koenig’s shipment. He’ll come around. We need this deal.” He listened to Cliff whine some more about how only Luke could appease their biggest client, and he exhaled hard. “I can be back there tomorrow.”

Hank reached up and yanked his arm. “No!”

The receiver shifted away from his ear, and Cliff’s tiny voice rambled on. Stunned, Luke could only stare. He had never seen Hank so worried or so mad before.

“Dammit, you need to stay here for a change,” his father’s oldest friend declared. “We need you. Here. We have to figure out the future, and I can’t do that alone.” He shot Luke a hard glare.

He shoved the phone back to his ear and kept his eyes on Hank. “Look, you have to take care of this, Cliff. You’re paid a lot of money to make decisions, so go make some.”
